Settling in Australia from Tanzania: tax number, bank and health cover before payday

Tips · 2026-11-08 · 8 min read

A smiling woman holds up her passport while receiving a new bank card at a bright blue bank counter.

Settling in Australia from Tanzania goes more smoothly when you do things in the right order: get a tax file number, open a bank account, understand your payslip and super, then sort out health cover. None of this replaces your visa, and none of it is automatic. This guide puts the first tasks in a sensible order, using only what the official pages say, so you know what to ask before you board the plane from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro.

It is general information, not advice for your own case. Your visa, your employer and your state can all change the details, so always confirm on the official pages linked below.

Settling in Australia from Tanzania: what to sort out first

Think of the first weeks as four jobs that depend on each other. Your tax number tells your employer how to report your pay. Your bank account is where that pay arrives. Your payslip then shows tax and super, and your health cover protects you if something goes wrong before you are settled.

If you are still choosing a route, read our guide to the Skills in Demand (482) visa for Tanzanians first. For the money side before you leave, see the cost of moving to Australia from Tanzania.

TaskWhat the official pages sayWhy it matters
Tax file number (TFN)Temporary visitors with a valid work rights visa can apply online. It is free and should arrive within 28 days.Your employer needs it to report your pay correctly.
Bank accountAsk a branch for an everyday account with no fees and show proof of identity such as a passport.Employers usually pay wages straight into your account.
Payslip and superYou get a pay slip showing earnings, tax paid and super. The general super rate is 12.00% from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.It is your record of what you were paid and what was put aside.
Health coverMedicare is for permanent visa holders. Subclass 482 holders must keep adequate health insurance.Your passport alone does not give you cover.

Tax file number: apply early, and only through the ATO

A tax file number, or TFN, is how the Australian Taxation Office recognises you as a taxpayer. The ATO says temporary visitors with a valid work rights visa can apply online through its Individual Auto-Registration system, that the TFN is free and that it should arrive within 28 days. You can read the details on the ATO page for foreign passport holders and temporary visitors.

Because it can take up to 28 days, apply as soon as the ATO page says you are eligible, not after your first shift. Keep the number private. Never send it, or a copy of your passport, to someone who contacted you out of the blue on WhatsApp or Telegram.

If you are going to New Zealand instead

New Zealand uses a different number. An IRD number identifies a person for tax in New Zealand, is kept for life and is free to apply for. Start from Inland Revenue's page on IRD numbers for individuals. If your job is under the Accredited Employer Work Visa, our AEWV guide for Tanzanians explains the visa side.

Opening a bank account and reading your first payslip

Moneysmart, the ASIC money guidance site, says a new arrival can open an account by going to a bank branch, asking for an everyday (transaction) account with no fees and showing proof of identity such as a passport or driving licence. Its page on money and working in Australia is also written for people who speak other languages.

In Australia an employer usually pays wages into the worker's bank account and gives a pay slip showing earnings, tax paid and super contributions. Fair Work says pay slips must be given within 1 working day of pay day, on paper or electronically. If you never receive one, ask your employer politely and keep a note of the date.

On super, the general superannuation guarantee rate is 12.00% for the period 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Check that a super line appears on your payslip, and ask your employer if it does not.

Health cover: do not assume Medicare

This is the step people most often get wrong. Permanent visa holders, such as those on a subclass 186, 189 or 190 visa, can enrol in Medicare, Australia's public health scheme. A temporary visa is a different situation.

Services Australia lists the countries that have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia: Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Tanzania is not among them, so a Tanzanian passport does not itself give reciprocal cover. See the Services Australia list for yourself.

For the Skills in Demand visa, Home Affairs says holders must maintain adequate health insurance for their whole stay, and that this is a condition of the visa. A post worth reading alongside this is MzansiAbroad's explainer on 482 health insurance and Medicare, written for South African readers but based on the same Australian rules.

Your first weeks in order

  1. Confirm which visa you hold and read its conditions, including the health insurance condition if you are on a 482.
  2. Apply for your tax file number (Australia) or IRD number (New Zealand) through the official page as soon as you are eligible.
  3. Take your passport to a bank branch and ask for an everyday account with no fees.
  4. Give your employer your TFN and bank details, and ask where your super will go.
  5. Check your first payslip for earnings, tax paid and super contributions.
  6. Arrange health insurance that meets your visa condition before you rely on any public cover.

The same habits help at work too. Keep your employment details and a current English CV in one folder. A tool such as Build AI CV can help you keep that CV tidy for the next job. For a wider look at roles, browse the live jobs on JobsAbroad Tanzania and the administration category.

JobFinder's guide to the first job in Australia or New Zealand, with super, tax numbers and payslips covers the same ground from the employee side.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Medicare comes with the visa. Medicare is for permanent visa holders, and Tanzania has no reciprocal agreement, so check your own cover.
  • Paying someone to get a TFN. The ATO says it is free to apply.
  • Waiting until the first shift to apply. The ATO says a TFN should arrive within 28 days, so apply early.
  • Sending a passport copy to a recruiter you have not checked. Scamwatch advises never sending identity documents unless you are certain they are genuine.
  • Ignoring the payslip. It is your record of tax and super. Read it every pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a tax file number before I land in Australia?

The ATO page we checked describes temporary visitors with a valid work rights visa applying through its online registration system. Read the page for the exact timing and conditions, and check whether your situation fits before you start, because the rules can change.

Is a tax file number the same as an IRD number in New Zealand?

No. They are two separate numbers for two separate tax systems. An IRD number identifies a person for tax in New Zealand, is kept for life and is free to apply for, so it is a New Zealand step only.

Does my Tanzanian passport give me Medicare in Australia?

No. Services Australia lists the countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, and Tanzania is not on that list. A Tanzanian passport does not give reciprocal cover, so read your own visa's health rules before you travel.

Do I need health insurance on a Skills in Demand (482) visa?

Home Affairs says holders of a subclass 482 visa must keep adequate health insurance for their whole stay in Australia, and that this is a visa condition. Ask your employer or a registered migration agent what counts as adequate before you buy a policy.

Do I have to pay anyone to get a tax file number?

No. The ATO says the application is free. If a person, agent or website asks you for money to get a tax file number for you, treat that as a warning sign and go to the official ATO page yourself.

Key takeaways

  • Do the basics in order: tax number, bank account, payslip and super, then health cover.
  • A TFN is free and, the ATO says, should arrive within 28 days, so apply early.
  • A Tanzanian passport does not give Medicare or reciprocal health cover.
  • If you are on a 482 visa, adequate health insurance is a visa condition.
  • Always confirm rules on the official pages, because they can change.
